New PW Circle
“Learn to Knit or Crochet”
By Martha Knichel
The PW in my church wanted to learn to knit and crochet in order to make baby caps for the hospitals in Malawi. We talked about
this at our meetings for several months and then, “bingo”, we had our first meeting. Now we are off and running. To everyone’s
surprise there were seven (7) women who showed up. We exchanged ideas and everyone brought their yarn and needles. Two
women were helping with the learning process. I have been a crocheting for years, but had always wanted to learn to knit, but the
opportunity had never been there. The knitting teacher got me started, but that did not last long until I was needed by the two women
working on the crocheted hats. At the second meeting of this group, there were two new women to join us. We pray that we will
continue to grow.
This is not about me, but I do pray that the other PW who are in the learning process are making more progress that I am. On by
way home from our first meeting, I stopped by the knit shop and picked up a “How to Knit” book. I have continued to work on the
knitting, but to date, I am still on my first cap. I have knitted about three or four inches several times, find a mistake, and rip it out. I
am afraid I will wear out the thread before I make the first cap. I have been told that knitting is relaxing, but so far, I have been
holding my needles so tight that my hands start hurting as well as my arms and shoulders. I guess I really need someone to message
my shoulders as I knit. I will continue and climb this mountain. I have taken time out from the knitting to makes some crocheted
baby caps. (I hope this will redeem me)
Our new circle has decided to meet each week until we finish the year. We have also set the end of the year as the time to send our
caps to New Windsor for shipment to Malawi. This new project has been very rewarding to see so many women interested in this
mission project and the excitement has spread to our PW as well. We have a number of women that work, but still are interested in
learning to knit, so plans are in the process to start an evening or Saturday morning circle for them. Some of the PW who are either
unable to get involved with the knitting or crocheting want to supply thread for the project. In the end, all are involved.
