One day I was looking online for a pattern for baby hats.  I came across two articles that were for Save The Children.  I intended at that very moment to knit some caps but then put it off.  I’ve knitted four now.  We have our Circle meeting on January 14 and I am going to ask the women to do a Baby Shower for the February meeting.  Then we can put our caps and other items together and mail them off.  Thanks for the idea!

 

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation noted in a recent report examining high infant mortality rates in developing countries that 3 out of 4 newborn deaths can be avoided with simple, low-cost practices such as knit caps to keep babies warm.  Babies are dying for lack of warm hats ….  “

 

More than four million newborns worldwide die each year in their first month of life, comparable to the number of babies born in the United States annually, Save the Children reported Monday.

Many of those infants could be saved with simple, inexpensive items, like sterile blades to cut the umbilical cord, antibiotics for pneumonia and knit caps to keep them warm, the group said in "State of the World's Mothers 2006," a new report. Ninety-nine percent of newborn deaths are in developing countries, where such items are often not widely available.”
