One day I was looking online for
a pattern for baby hats. I came across two articles that were for Save
The Children. I intended at that very moment to knit some caps
but then put it off. I’ve knitted four now. We have our Circle
meeting on January 14 and I am going to ask the women to do a Baby Shower for
the February meeting. Then we can put our caps and other items together
and mail them off. Thanks for the idea!
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation noted in a recent report
examining high infant mortality rates in developing countries that 3 out of 4
newborn deaths can be avoided with simple, low-cost practices such as knit caps
to keep babies warm. Babies are dying for lack of warm hats …. “
More than four million newborns worldwide die each year in
their first month of life, comparable to the number of babies born in the
United States annually, Save the Children reported Monday.
Many of those infants could be saved with simple,
inexpensive items, like sterile blades to cut the umbilical cord, antibiotics
for pneumonia and knit caps to keep them warm, the group said in "State of
the World's Mothers 2006," a new report. Ninety-nine percent of newborn
deaths are in developing countries, where such items are often not widely
available.”
